What Our Retreats Offer

Physical Lab’s retreats are immersive, transformational experiences held primarily on the island of Crete, Greece, designed to deepen physical presence, embodiment, and authentic performance or wellbeing.

Rooted in the Physical Lab methodology—a body-centric approach that dissolves habitual patterns and reconnects mind, body, emotion, and instinct — these retreats draw participants from around the world who seek meaningful personal evolution, expressive freedom, and holistic growth.

Physical Lab Acting Retreat

The Physical Lab Retreat is the flagship mentorship event for our performers. Led by founder Yorgos Karamalegos, this six-day immersive acting retreat unfolds in rural Douliana, Crete, for committed actors and performers from across the globe.

This retreat combines deep embodiment practices with acting craft development. Participants explore presence and authenticity in performance by releasing ingrained habits and conditioning that can limit expressive freedom. The aim is a performance rooted in truth — where voice, body, emotion, instinct, and language flow together.

Core Elements

  • Personalised coaching and guidance from Yorgos

  • Embodiment work to deepen access to authentic expression

  • Tools for character development, self-awareness, and emotional depth

  • Exploration of personal strengths and performance obstacles

  • Career coaching and guidance tailored to each actor

  • A performance reel capturing work from the retreat — often used for auditions or submissions.

This retreat is suited for experienced actors ready to deepen their craft, expand their presence, and step more fully into their artistic voice.

Fitness & Embodiment Retreats

The Fitness & Embodiment Retreats are week-long retreats also hosted in Crete, expanding Physical Lab’s work beyond acting into broader body-mind wellbeing. These retreats are offered twice a year, in June and September.

This retreat integrates physical fitness, somatic embodiment, movement, mindfulness, and science-backed wellness to help participants reset and strengthen their bodies and minds. It’s designed for individuals seeking more than a typical fitness camp — but rather a deep, integrative journey into embodied wellbeing.

Typical Retreat Components

  • Daily strength and mobility training

  • Embodiment & nervous system practices

  • Nutrition education focusing on microbiome and sleep

  • Breathwork, meditation, and restorative rest

  • Nature immersion in Crete’s mountains and coastline

  • Small group connection and support in a non-overwhelming setting.

Instructors usually include fitness expert Alex Crockford, embodiment practitioner Yorgos Karamalegos, and specialists in nutrition and sleep. The retreats are suitable for people of varying fitness levels who want to boost strength, energy, emotional presence, and overall resilience.

What Participants Can Expect

Embodied Presence

A core focus on embodiment practices—accessing awareness through the body to deepen connection with self, others, and creativity.

Deconditioning & Authenticity

Tools and techniques to strip away habitual patterns and social conditioning, allowing authentic presence and expression to emerge. Participants learn to recognise reactive behaviours in real time and replace them with conscious choice, responsiveness, and emotional clarity.

Holistic Integration

Whether through acting, movement, breathwork, or nutrition, our retreats support integration of mind, body, emotion, and instinct—helping participants leave with deeper self-understanding and practical tools for life beyond the retreat.

Natural Environment

Hosted in Crete’s restorative landscapes—mountains, sea, and countryside—our retreats utilise nature as a backdrop for exploration and renewal. Time outdoors becomes part of the work itself: walking, resting, moving and reflecting in open space helps regulate the nervous system, quiet mental noise, and reconnect participants to instinctive awareness and grounded presence.

Community & Support

Small group sizes and supportive facilitation create safe, connective spaces in which participants can challenge themselves and grow both personally and collectively. Through shared experience, open dialogue, and attentive guidance, a sense of trust develops that allows vulnerability, creative risk-taking, and meaningful connection to emerge naturally within the group.
