Get Your Acting Into Your Body.

Root Your Acting In Your Essence.

This year we are creating a site specific performance,

based on a play.

Each year, our annual Spring residency brings together ensembles of international performing artists to train and perform on the island of Crete.

This year the group will work as a company and the process will culminate on a site specific performance. Building on the performance element, as it was developed in 2016 with the residency on Macbeth at the Carob Mill Arts Centre, (video promo), the Lab has organised a schedule of work that fits five performances, which will be performed at live audience at the end of the second week. The purpose of repeated performances is to give the actors the opportunity to perform, receive notes and then try again.

Our aim is that our actors gain new tools for their craft, a deeper understanding of their own technique, and also leave the residency with the experience of how that applies immediately to performance.

The residency in Crete is the biggest event of our laboratory, and it offers the opportunity to actors and performers to experience the whole range of our methodology.

The training will be led by artistic director Yorgos Karamalegos as well as visiting practitioners whose work complements the Lab's methodology.

We will work with a group of strictly 10 actors so the places are very limited.

*The choice of play will be announced at a later stage.

The training is led by Yorgos Karamalegos

Yorgos Karamalegos is an actor, performer, director, choreographer, and physical acting teacher. He is the artistic director and founder of the laboratory, having previously co-founded Tmesis Theatre Company and Physical Fest (the UK's international festival for performance). Yorgos has taught, directed and choreographed at LAMDA, RADA, Drama Centre, The Actors Centre in London, Williams College (USA), as well as leading workshops and residencies nationally and internationally. He has also worked extensively as an acting coach, preparing actors for productions including ‘The Day I shall Declare it’, Richard III, ‘Thor’ and many more. Yorgos starred in the feature film 'The Last Note’, directed by Padelis Voulgaris, which won several awards in Greece and the US. He recently performed in London in a production of Lorca’s ‘The Blood Wedding’, directed by George Richmond Scott (associate director of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), and he is currently directing a site specific project, commission of the city of Chania,  which will premiere on the 4th of December.

'Physical Lab isn't an acting technique, it's far more than that.

It's a place where I found qualities of life in myself and others that I was never aware of, which shifted everything for me.'
